Meeting

Petra and I met in May 1993. She had come to a church service at Saint Clement's church where the English congregation met every Sunday. My friend Tim and I had been out all day and had about an hour's sleep before going to church to confess our sins. I didn't do much confessing or pay much attention to what was going on as I was tranfixed by the cute blonde girl in front of me. Fortunately, she stayed for coffee afterwards and having a pleasant conversation with an American called Kyle, when I elbowed him out of the way and introduced myself. We hit it off immediately. She told me later that she thought she would like to marry me during our first conversation. I quite liked her too. We started seeing each other five weeks after we first met. It was my birthday. I was interviewed on Radio One that evening with my band, and Petra was listening with her friends in her hall of residence. I sang 'Yesterday' live and dedicated it to her. Five months after we met, I asked her to marry me. It involved me pinning her to a shop window on Klatovy's main square. She said 'yes.' It was the best thing I have ever done.
