Settling Down

We got back to England in May 1998 and both began to work doing temporary jobs. Petra started to temp at the School of Healthcare Studies which at the time was based at High Royds in Guiseley. She soon had secured a permanent post there giving clerical support to Sarah, who would remain her boss for the rest of her life. Petra was always well organised and she was proud of the work that she did for the school. In September 1999, I got a temporary teaching job at Benton Park. Petra used to tease me about being a 'pomocny ucitel' (helping teacher). She had to stop that in September 2000, when I got a permanent contract at Crawshaw in Pudsey. This was to have far reaching effects for us as it allowed us to buy our house in Horsforth and think about starting a family. We moved in to the house in October 2000, and Petra was soon in her element furnishing and decorating it. Having lived like students for the previous seven years, it was strange and exciting to be homeowners. We even started behaving like responsible people but not all the time. What really gave us a dose of adulthood was the news we got in September 2001. It seemed that our days as a family of two were numbered.
