Classes with Petra

Created by Andy Fell on 09/09/2012 One of my fondest memories of Petra was her ability to make each class interesting and unique – so now that I am also a teacher, I look back on this with a smile. She would genuinely sympathise with our difficulties grappling with Czech grammar and would always have a reassuring word when needed. She was keen that we didn’t just learn the Czech language, but also learnt about Czech culture so as to get more of a feel for her country. One of the ways she would do this was to occasionally show us a film – the two I remember were ‘Krtek ve městě’ ('The Mole in Town’) and ‘Český sen’ (‘The Czech Dream’) – both were not only wonderfully entertaining to watch, but were powerful observations on Communism and consumerism. They showed how the Czechs use humour in order to poke fun and raise important questions about both systems. I am now living and working in Prague and happily married – due in no small measure to studying Czech under Petra’s tutelage at Leeds Met. I was deeply saddened to belatedly hear of her passing away. My heart goes out to her family and I hope that her children grow up recognising how amazing their mother was, as well as how much she has touched the lives of so many people in such a positive way.
